Spring Annuals, Blooming Hanging Baskets and Spring Vegetables plants
 arriving daily at the market.
One of Stacey's Favorite Spring annuals is the Supertunias from Proven Winners.  We plant these on our retaining wall at the market.  In the 8 ft. long planters, we only put 6 plants in each planter.  A little goes a long way.  These petunias spread wonderfully!!!  To keep these looking beautiful, you must fertilize at least twice a week by using a simple Miracle Gro mixture for flowering annuals.
A MUST TRY!!!!

News From The Farm
After a cool week, a planting marathon is now in progress at the farm.  A lot of the summer vegetable plants will go into the ground this week - cantaloupes, watermelons, peppers and those wonderful cut flower plants!!!
Radishes, spinach, spring onions, asparagus and rhubarb are fresh picked from the farm to the market this week.  Bring on the heat and those occasional showers!!!

Fresh Strawberries at the Market
Still getting delicious strawberries from Virginia.  Maryland will probably be picking soon.  Picking at our farm should start in about 2 weeks!!! Fresh strawberry pies and fresh baked strawberry bread from our country kitchen this week.

Enjoy This Week's Weather & Get Digging!!!!

Wed, 25 Apr 2012 05:19:26 -0700 Welcome Rain!! http://butchersfarmmarket.posterous.com/welcome-rain http://butchersfarmmarket.posterous.com/welcome-rain

We think we can hear the crops growing since the rain has arrived!!!  The rain is welcome but the cold temps following the rain are not.  Just a helpful reminder- if you have anything tender planted you probably should think about cover them this week.  If they are calling for temps at night in the mid 30's a sheet or bucket will work but if temps go below 34 try to find an old heavy thick blanket to protect from freezing.

News From The Farm
Lots of activity in the seeding shed this week- practically every vegetable will be seeded this week.  It will be the 4th or 5th planting for some spring vegetables like broccoli and the 1st or 2nd planted of other vegetables like cantaloupes & watermelons.  The 3rd planting of Stacey's cut flowers will happen this week.  Mark refers to them as colored weeds.  Let's prove him wrong this summer and let him know how nice his colored weeds look for your summer centerpieces!!!!

Fresh Savings at the Market this Week
Our Farm Fresh Spinach-$1.49/bag; Virginia Grown Strawberries-$3.99/qt;  Slicing Tomatoes-$.99/lb; Vidalia Onions-$.79/lb
Fresh Cucumbers-2 for $1.00
This rain should give us a nice supply of fresh asparagus and should help the rhubarb to grow so we can start to pick in abundance!!!

A FARMER LOVES THE RAIN;
ALSO FOR THE RESTING TIME IT BRINGS!!!

Thank you
We had a great turn out for our Annual Easter Egg Hunt.  Approximately 350 kids attended.  Great time by all!!  Thank you to all that attended.

News From The Farm
Mother Nature has let us know this week that April's temperatures can be a challenge.  However, we can say that we are winning the battle.  Cold nights have had Mark up at 3 a.m. turning on the overhead irrigation to protect the strawberry blossoms. As of Saturday, his early morning rises were a success.  All blossoms look healthy and vibrant.  Cole crops survived, growing slowly & surely.
The mighty strong sweet corn is doing well under its plastic protection.  Would like to see warm temperatures and a steady rain for the sweet corn and all the crops.  Irrigation pumps are in full swing watering all the young transplants since Mother Nature has neglected to do that. Again, we are winning that battle.
Welcome to a farmer's life in the Spring.
LOVE WHAT WE DO /DO WHAT WE LOVE!!!

NEWS FROM THE FARM

First planting of green beans is started in the greenhouse.  These will then be transplanted out in the fields around April 1 under protective cover. Fresh Picked Green Beans by the beginning of June. Yum Yum!!!  Let's all hope that this warm weather continues. We are concerned about the fruit trees.  Our orchard friends tell us that the apricot trees are in full bloom.  A cold spell could hurt the crop but if it continues to stay warm we could be enjoying fresh apricots about 2 weeks earlier than years past.

Thu, 02 Feb 2012 06:13:00 -0800 Daffodils!? http://butchersfarmmarket.posterous.com/daffodils http://butchersfarmmarket.posterous.com/daffodils

Does anyone else have little daffodils peeking through the soil at their house? Even though Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and predicted six more weeks of winter, those daffodils have their own spring agenda and Butcher’s Market is on board! We have potted mini daffodils for just $2.99 each and flowering primroses for $1.99. They are the prettiest reminders that spring is just around the corner...

Meanwhile, soups for this week are:
Ham Pot Pie
Chicken Noodle
Potato, and
Ham & Green Bean

It seems that February has something for everyone: Daffodils, Valentine’s Day, the Super Bowl. This is a month that keeps you busy, but rest assured that the ladies at Butcher’s have your baked good bases covered. Cakes and Valentine Sandtart cookies are being made with love as we speak. And, as always, when you stop by the Market, you’ll find our great selection of fresh fruits and vegetables at great prices.

Hey, speaking of football, whether you’re hosting the Super Bowl Party at your house or going someplace else to watch, be sure to stop by the market to sample some of our dips. (We have chips, too!)

See you this weekend!

Thu, 26 Jan 2012 07:38:00 -0800 Baby, it's cold outside! http://butchersfarmmarket.posterous.com/baby-its-cold-outside http://butchersfarmmarket.posterous.com/baby-its-cold-outside
We heard on the radio that the 'worst' day of the year is January 24th: the holidays are over, daylight is fleeting, and it's so long until spring. Thank goodness it's already January 26th! We made it through, friends!

Meanwhile, no matter the date or the weather, you know the good folks here at Butcher's Market are keeping the shelves stocked and the coolers full of fresh local produce (believe it or not, some vegetables do very well in the cold months...or in the greenhouse), plus delicious, colorful canned goods and homemade desserts and breads. And local apples are just $0.99/pound for over 10 varieties. Pick and choose, as usual.

Grandmas' soups this week are:
Cream of Broccoli Soup
Stuffed Pepper Soup
Chicken Corn Soup
Chicken Pot Pie

News From The Farm
Seed ordering is in progress and they're arriving daily. So far, we have 27 varieties of sweet corn, which we hope to have in the ground in a little less than three months.

One last thing: Valentine Heart Cakes and Valentine Sandtart Cookies are being made this week, because it's never too early to tell your sweetheart you love em’!

And don't forget, we're still in our Winter Hours, so we'll be seeing you on Thursdays, Fridays, or Saturdays. Or all three!

Thu, 12 Jan 2012 14:28:00 -0800 We're back! http://butchersfarmmarket.posterous.com/were-back http://butchersfarmmarket.posterous.com/were-back

And we've brought some Florida delights back up north to ring in the new year!

Strawberries are just $2.50 a quart
Brocolli crowns are just $1.99 a pound
Grape Tomatoes are just $1.99 a pint
Iceburg Lettuce s just $.99 a head!

These southern fruits and veggies are just what the doctor ordered to keep our moods and tables bright during the short days of January.

We're also still featuring local apples: with over ten varieties to choose from, we're sure to have something to pease even the most particular of apple eaters. And since you can mix and match for just .99 a pound, there's no worries about getting enough for those lunch sacks every day of the week.

Post

And, Grandma's back in the kitchen. After Christmas, just like us, she took a little rest, but now she's returned to her kitchen at Buther's and cooking up a storm. Soups this week are ham pot pie, chicken pot pie, macaroni & beef, and chicken noodle. There's nothing quite like some hot soup and warm bread on the supper table in winter, is there?

See you soon at the market! (Don't forget, we're open Thursdays through Saturdays until March!)

Don’t worry: we’ll be back 12 January, when our winter hours will be Thursdays & Fridays from 9-6 and Saturdays from 9-3.

Our homemade offerings will still include Grandma’s delicious soups and fresh baked goods, along with the apples, fresh potatoes, local cider and all-natural milk that keeps us all going in through the winter.

We look forward to seeing you then, with the hopes your New Year has begun as restoring and energizing as our own.
