Got our eyes on those apples!

Butcher’s cornered the Market with crisp, delicious apples (they’re right there, past the potatoes and onions on your right) An assortment of Jonagold, Smokehouse, Macintosh, Cortland, Gala, Honeycrisp, and Golden Supreme will suit any one of your many fall recipes, from tartlets to dumplings to after school snacks.

...Not to mention the fresh pressed local apple cider that *some people* have been waiting for all summer. Oh, boy, do we love fall and cool evenings and mulled cider!

If you’re still working on preparing your pantry for those long winter nights, we still have tender, slender green beans: just $.99 a pound and perfect for canning or as a fresh steamed dish in the dinner table.

Plus, pumpkins, pumpkins pumpkins! All shapes, sizes, and colors! As usual, Butcher’s has a spectacular selection of gourds. Whether you’re decorating your porch for a harvest party or making some squash bisque for your hubby, we’ve got your gourds covered.

And my favorite (maybe everyone’s favorite) fall flowers: Hardy Mums are now available at the Market. They come in a variety of sizes, so if you have a special garden spot in mind, we have the splash of fall color you’re looking for in exactly the right size:

Big: 9-inch pots are $4.99

Small: 4-inch pots are 2.49 each

Just right: 6-inch pots are $3.99

Other available hints of autumn include flowering kale or cabbage, just $4.99 each, plus corn shucks, gourds, straw bales, and fall perennials.

Some of Mark’s summer veggies are still performing beautifully, despite the *rainiest year ever* (seriously, it’s on record!): his famous sweet bell peppers are still the champs, and we’re also bringing in hot peppers, cherry tomatoes, slicing tomatoes, pickling cucumbers, slicing cucumbers, and potatoes on a practically daily basis. Broccoli and cauliflower are rearing their pretty heads and coming into season, so get ready! And, sweet potato digging begins soon!

When it rains, it pours.

Once in a while, a farmer can hit a rough patch as far as the waether is concerned, and the past couple of weeks on Butcher's farm have been a couple of doozies. All that rain wreaked havok on our tomatoes, but the news isn't all bad: we're coming into fall, cool and refreshed, and ready for the harvest.

We still have plenty of Butcher's renowned peppers; famous as far away as Vermont, these ginormous, gorgeous peppers are just 2 for $1. Sweet corn and those beautiful eggplants are plentiful, too, so be sure to enjoy them at their freshest. And a word to the wise: peach season will be over before you know it, so take advantage of Butcher's selection, including Laurel and Redskin. Plus, pears (Bartlett and Seckel) are in season as we speak, oh boy! Think of how welcome a glass jar of peaches will be when you pull it out of your cupboard in February. Get canning, everybody! (Canned goods are also prefect for the holiday season, for those of you who think that far ahead.)

Apple season is in full-swingm but if there's one thing that you don't have to worry about, it's Butcher's supply of fresh apples, right through December, and beyond. No pressure there, friends. You can take your time and enjoy the fall.

Speaking of fall, have anyone else's mums from last year begun to bloom? Ours have, and they are the loveliest fall colors: deep reds and oranges. It makes me want to stock up on more for next year; and the timing is perfect, because this week, Butcher's is beginning to bring in the pumpkins, asters, hardy mums, pansies, and Indian Corn that make Autumn so welcome around the house.

Hopefully, we'll see you at the Market soon!
